“A key component in the pre-operative assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is the measurement of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2). The ‘gold standard’ of cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET) is a cycle ergometer-based progressive ramp from stationary to maximal exercise capacity. The limitations of this technique include expensive and bulky equipment, time to completion (15 – 20 minutes), and location in a dedicated lab. A mobile, Bluetooth-based mask with an integrated oxygen analyzer was worn during the standardized exercise protocol (6 Minute Walk Test, 6MWT). A novel exercise protocol with a stationary stepping incremental pace (increasing by 5 steps every 30 seconds using a metronome)sequence for a maximum of 6 minutes (6-minute Incremental Step Test, 6MIST) was also completed.”
