I used 3 of the 33 defined lactate thresholds in the literature namely speeds that elicited 2.5, 4.0 and 5.5 mMol. I then put them to running 6 square wave 3 minute intervals at each threshold speed with an equal distance recovery speed that did not have a systemic lactate rise response (the supposed aerobic threshold) as measured by fingertip mirco-puncture at end interval stage. The heart rate peaks at end stage for 2.5, 4.0 and 5.5. drifted slightly, moderately and markedly after each 3 min. threshold for 6 interval repeats. VO2 peaked equally with a straight flat slope across the 6 repeats albeit higher for each level threshold repeats. However, contrary to Anaerobic threshold theory the peak end interval lactates started slightly up, dropped below resting levels, and then drifting upward for the lowest 2.5 mMol speed intervals, no matter the VO2. At the 4.0 mMOl threshold speeds we saw upward drifting end interval lactate on all 6 repeats, except the highest fit Olympian level athlete, who pulled blood lactate levels back down in every recovery. The final speed intervals that that solicited 5.5 mMol, saw the higher fitter (Olympian) pulling blood lactate back down every interval, the national team athletes (4) had upward drifting end interval lactates, and the recreative runner had lactate breakaway exponential rise on the last intervals after upwards drifting lactate for the first 5 intervals. This debunks the anaerobic VO2 theories of lactate production and supports the progressive neural shift theories with time to fatigue being uncompensated metabolic pathways capacities dropping over time, regardless of VO2 and Heart rate responses levels. Intervals at 5.5 mMOl were at runners 92% fractional unitization of VO2 max Dr. Robert Seguin (My Master paper under Dr, Alfred Reed U of O).

The work rate at CP was way higher (approx. 150%) of that at 4 mmol.L-1. This demonstrated very clearly to me the fallacy of basing steady-rate training on a lactate value determined from incremental testing. I have been using the CP/CS test ever since with success.

Daniel, excellent question. Currently resting energy expenditure is calculated using the assumption of RQ = 0.85. We will release a CO2-sensing version of the VO2 Master Analyzer in the near future that will improve this calculation. This new version will also be offered to existing customers at a special upgrade cost.
